The South Burnett Local Disaster Management Coordinator is keeping a close watch on Cyclone Debbie.
The cyclone, which made landfall near Proserpine on Tuesday afternoon, is expected to track south once it weakens into a low, and continue over the South Burnett on Thursday and Friday before moving out to sea near Brisbane.
The Local Disaster Management Coordinator said on Tuesday rainfall totals greater than 100mm over these two days are possible, according to the latest Bureau of Meteorology forecast.
“Given the history of ex-cyclones resulting in major flooding across the region, we are maintaining a watch on the situation,” he said.
“With Saturday being the start of school holidays, we are also gathering information on numbers of visitors that will be at Boondooma and Yallakool, with Council staff preparing contingency plans should substantial rain and flooding become likely.
“General preparations are also being made in other areas of Council’s operations as a precautionary measure.”
The Local Disaster Management Coordinator will issue a further update about noon on Wednesday.
