The Kilkivan Great Horse Ride planned for April 1 has been postponed to September 30 this year because of the current high fire danger along the ride’s trails.
Outgoing president Dave Golding said on Wednesday the management team had reach a unanimous decision to postpone the event in the interests of safety for all riders, horses and support crews.
“With a month to go, we felt we needed to make the call today in order to provide sufficient time for all intending participants to make alternative arrangements,” Mr Golding said.
“We have been closely watching all available weather predictions for the next four weeks.
“After close consultation with property owners, we have concluded the likelihood of (receiving) enough rain to significantly reduce the fire risk by March 31 is too low to proceed with our event as scheduled.
“Conditions on all trails are tinder-dry at the moment.”
Trail Co-ordinator Vern Berry said Kilkivan was already on Level 4 water restrictions, so it would be reckless to go ahead with the event given the current weather conditions.
However, the rescheduled Great Horse Ride will proceed as normal.
“We plan to have the same trail options, the same program and the same determination to deliver an excellent fun, family-friendly weekend,” Mr Berry said.
“It’s the last weekend of the spring school holidays in Queensland, so plan to be in Kilkivan then!”
