Sharon and Bill Duncombe, from Cooyar, spent Saturday night celebrating in style at Cooyar Hall, where they attended the inaugural Cooyar Show Cocktail Party

February 13, 2017

Cooyar Hall was packed with guests on Saturday night, despite record breaking day time temperatures in the area that reached as high as 41 degrees.

The occasion was the annual Cooyar Show Ball, which was turned into a Cocktail Party this year to breathe new life into one of the town’s oldest institutions.

A large crowd of elegantly dressed women mingled with dapperly dressed men – many of whom wore ties despite the sweltering weather – while about 20 children played in a special area set up for them in the hall’s Supper Room.

Guests were able to quench their thirst at a standard bar or, for the more adventurous, at a cocktail bar set up for the occasion.

A long buffet table was kept supplied with finger foods and fruits all night, and Loaded Entertainment provided an expert DJ soundtrack for the occasion.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of 2017’s Miss Cooyar Showgirl and Miss Cooyar Teen Showgirl, and this year the awards went to Brianna Barron and Bree Duncombe, respectively.

Both girls are Cooyar locals and both are active in the Cooyar Show Society.

Brianna, 19, told the audience she was very proud to have been selected as the Show’s representative, and said several new features to watch out for at this year’s Cooyar Show on February 24-25 included a campdraft, a motocross challenge and a smash-up derby.

Bree, 13, who attends Nanango State High School, said she was proud to represent the Show Society, too.

The Cocktail Party was organised by Cooyar local Jacinta Ryan, with help from other Show Society volunteers.

Jacinta said she was pleased with the way the night worked out.

Despite the heat, attendance numbers were high and most guests appeared to be having a very good time.
