Tuesday night was the start of high school formals week in the South Burnett, and Kingaroy’s St Mary’s Catholic College led the way with their traditional Valedictory Dinner at Kingaroy Town Hall.
As usual, crowds of onlookers packed the forecourt to watch Year 12 students and their escorts walk the red carpet, admiring the elegant gowns, the hairstyles and the stylish suits.
A small fleet of cars ranging from old Holdens to a new Mustang ferried the young couples to the venue.
Once out of their vehicles, they were met by a small army of professional paparazzi and an even bigger horde of proud mums, dads, relatives, family friends and younger students, all clicking away on their mobiles or tablets to record the once-in-a-lifetime moment.
This year, 21 couples made their way through the crowds, all looking simultaneously happy their secondary schooling was about to come to an end, and a handful just a bit nervous about the exams that lie ahead.
A running commentary by Damien Martoo kept the crowd entertained between each car arriving.
This was also the first Valedictory Dinner for new St Mary’s principal Angela Myles, who took over the reins from former principal Michael Nayler at the end of 2015.
