Former Kingaroy Red Ant Lane Ferling has signed a contract to play for the Cronulla Sharks in the Holden Cup.

The Under 20s National Youth Competition is the successor to the old Jersey Flegg Cup and is the traditional proving ground for future NRL stars.

Games are played before NRL matches.

Earlier this year, Ferling was named FOGS Colts Challenge Player of the Year at the 2016 Queensland Rugby League Awards.

He earned this with strong performances with Norths Devils U20s in 2016.

He played five-eighth for the Devils and also captained the team.

Last year, Ferling was selected in the Australian Universities rugby league team which toured New Zealand.
