South Burnett Relay For Life committee member Jenny Underwood dropped by the Kingaroy TAFE last week to thank students and teachers for their help with this year’s fund-raising drive.
TAFE Hospitality teachers Jason Ford and Sandra Perry and a volunteer team of hospitality students had played a major role in this year’s “Dinner With The Captains”, and on behalf of Relay For Life Jenny had come to present TAFE with a special “thank you” framed print.
“Dinner With The Captains was a success because of our volunteers and TAFE hospitality staff,” Jenny told a crowd of about 20 people at a small afternoon tea set up for the occasion.
“We really couldn’t have done it without you, and we really appreciate your support.”
Jenny said that this year’s Relay For Life had raised $173,000 and the South Burnett’s average contribution towards the Relay is around $5 per head.
“Nationally, the average contribution is about $1 per head, so that just goes to show how much the South Burnett punches above its weight,” she said.
Jenny Butler, TAFE South-West’s Executive Director of Studies, thanked Jenny for her kind comments and said TAFE was delighted to be involved in the annual event.
Apart from helping a worthy cause, Dinner With The Captains provided valuable real-life experience for the college’s hospitality students, and they got a lot out of it, she said.
Jason Ford, who has been part of Relay For Life since it started 11 years ago, thanked the Relay For Life committee for the print.
It will join other treasured Relay For Life mementos in the Hospitality faculty’s collection.
