September 14, 2016
Rural women from around the region have been invited to the Wondai Diggers Club on Friday, October 14, for coffee and cake.
October 15 is World Rural Women’s Day – now also known as the International Day Of Rural Women.
It was launched by the United Nations in 1996 to help raise awareness that the majority of poor people in the world are women who live in rural areas, and that these women are overwhelmingly responsible for feeding hungry men and children, as well as themselves.
The cause was taken up locally by Centacare South Burnett and the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network in 2010 when they held the South Burnett’s first WRWD lunch at Wooroolin Hall, with former Queensland Governor Her Excellency Penelope Wensley as special guest speaker.
And in the years since then, local celebrations for the International Day Of Rural Women have become an annual event.
Since this year’s WRWD falls on a Saturday, BIEDO and Graziher Magazine will be marking it a day early with a celebration at the Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street between 9:30am and noon.
Guests can get to enjoy coffee and cake, and meet other rural women who’ll share their inspirational stories.
All women are welcome but to help plan the catering an RSVP to BIEDO on (07) 4169-5456 or by email by Tuesday, October 11, would be greatly appreciated.
