Nanango became the first South Burnett town to be officially declared an ‘RV Friendly Town’ on Tuesday.

The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia, which represents 66,000 recreational vehicle (RV) users, added Nanango to its list of 59 Queensland towns which have satisfied its criteria.

The self-contained RV tourism market is currently estimated to be worth more than $2.5 billion annually, and the number of registered RVs in Australia is expected to grow to more than 700,000 vehicles by 2020.

The club, which aims to create partnerships between RV tourists and the towns they visit, hopes to maximise the value of RV tourism to metropolitan and regional Australia.

In order to qualify for the program, towns must satisfy a number of criteria including:

  • Access to a general shopping area
  • Provision of appropriate low cost overnight parking for self-contained vehicles, and
  • Access to potable water and a free dump point

The group says Nanango’s business community should see some direct benefits from the town joining the RV Friendly Town network.

Nanango will be promoted to RV travellers across Australia through the CMCA club magazine The Wanderer, as well as the CMCA website and social media.

The announcement was welcomed by Sport and Recreation portfolio chair Cr Roz Frohloff.

“Nanango is fortunate to have fully equipped caravan parks catering to the needs of those who want to extend their stay in this region,” Cr Roz Frohloff said.

“The town also supports RVs by providing specially allocated parking for RV visitors at the South Burnett Energy Centre for those wanting to shop in the CBD.”

The announcement was also welcomed by South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell.

“Being an RV Friendly Town, Nanango has the opportunity to promote the region’s attractions and capture a part of this massive growth market,” Cr Campbell said.

“I’m sure RV tourists will quickly let their fellow travellers know what a great place Nanango is to visit, and encourage them to experience what it is that makes this town unique.”
