Police are investigating the theft of firearms from a rural property at Boondooma.

The theft occurred sometime between 5:00pm on Thursday, August 25, and 9:00am on Friday, August 26.

Officer-in-charge of Kingaroy Police, Senior Sergeant Duane Frank, said there had been a couple of incidents of firearms theft in the South Burnett recently.

He wanted to remind weapons owners that they are required to store their firearms safely in a locked cupboard or in a gunsafe.

Snr Sgt Frank said police regularly undertook weapons audits by visiting gun owners and inspecting their weapons and storage facility.

He said anyone who had questions about weapons storage should contact local police.

And if anyone had knowledge about illegal weapons, they could call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800-333-000.

From the Stock & Rural Crime Investigation Squad:

Recent thefts are a reminder for all firearm owners to keep their firearms and ammunition secure and ensure any keys to safes are well hidden.

Also, it is good practice to conduct regular audits on your firearms and check the security of your safe so that any thefts can be reported in a timely manner.

How to best safeguard your firearms:

  • Do comply with the safe storage requirements prescribed by the Queensland firearms legislation
  • Do store your firearm in a compliant locked container when not being used or carried
  • Do store any ammunition for your firearm in a separate locked container
  • Do take all reasonable precautions to ensure the firearm is kept safely, is not lost or stolen and does not come into the possession of an unauthorised person
  • Don’t leave the keys to your firearms safe in a place that is easily accessible by intruders
  • Don’t locate the safe where it can be accessed easily or in sight of intruders e.g. unlocked garage or shed
  • Don’t leave power tools or other implements nearby which could be used to break into the safe
  • Don’t leave a firearm lying around, loaded or unattended
