Police are investigating whether fatigue played a role in the fatal car crash that occurred on the Bunya Highway near Kingaroy on Sunday morning.

Officer-in-charge of Kingaroy Police, Senior Sergeant Duane Frank, said the crash occurred about 200m north of the intersection with Reedy Creek Road.

He said the Subaru Forester was heading towards Kingaroy when it crossed the oncoming lane, left the road and hit two trees.

The 21-year-old driver is believed to have been on his way from NSW to Hervey Bay.

He was killed on impact.

Snr Sgt Frank said the cause of the crash was still being investigated but fatigue may have been a factor.

The vehicle would also be examined for any mechanical issues.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

There have been 159 fatalities so far this year on Queensland roads, including 15 in August.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this report said the man was from Urangan. He was formerly from Urangan but more recently had shifted to NSW.
