Schools all over the South Burnett have been celebrating reading this week with parades and special events to mark Children’s Book Week.
At St Mary’s Catholic College, the traditional dress-up parade is only one part of the activities … there is also a popular Campfire Stories night.
Students, parents and teachers donned their PJs on Monday evening for a night of torchlight fun.
The theme for this year’s Book Week is “Australia! Story Country” so it was fitting that many of the campfire tales had an Aussie flavour.
A highlight was when teachers John Dalton and Martin Perrett – complete with swag – re-enacted Murray Hartin’s bush poem “Turbulence” about NT legend Billy Hayes and a rocky trip on board an aircraft.
The children also enjoyed joining in a reading of Marcia Vaughan’s picture book ‘Wombat Stew” (gooey, brewy, yummy, chewy, wombat stew!)
After the evening of reading, the students enjoyed milk and cookies.
