Number 1 in the Burnett! Cherbourg Hornets players and supporters celebrate their victory over the Mundubbera Tigers in the Burnett final

August 22, 2016

South Burnett premiers Cherbourg Hornets put the icing on the cake on Saturday afternoon with a runaway win over Mundubbera in the inaugural Burnett Rugby League Final played at Nanango.

Mundubbera Tigers won the North Burnett premiership with a 40-15 win over Eidsvold a fortnight ago.

There are hopes the play-off between the two top teams for the Burnett crown could become an annual fixture on the local rugby league calendar.

Cherbourg dominated the play for most of the game except for a period in the second half when the visiting Tigers were allowed to regain some pride.

Fred Aubrey opened Cherbourg’s account while the official clock still read 40 minutes to go.

After 10 minutes, the Hornets had racked up four quick tries to lead 20-nil.

Mundubbera finally got points on the board with the score at 26-0 when Cameron McDonald crossed for a try.

The Hornets scored twice more before the Tigers drew blood again via a try by Nikorima Kapene.

At half-time, Cherbourg were cruising with a 38-12 lead.

The Hornets resumed where they had left off after the break, with three more quick tries.

With the score at 56-12, the Hornets started coasting, letting the Tigers score three tries back-to-back and giving the Mundubbera fans who had travelled all the way down to Nanango something to cheer about.

But with five minutes left on the clock, the Hornets  got back into gear and put on two more tries before the final hooter.

The final score was Cherbourg 66, Mundubbera 28.

Cherbourg tries were scored by Fred Aubrey(2), Carl Aubrey, Alex Speedy (2), Errol Simpson Jnr (2), Keith Gadd Snr, Fred Cobbo,  Mark Saltner, Danny Weazel and Norman Wragge. Goals were kicked by Fred Aubrey (7), Carl Aubrey and Danny Weazel.

U16 Minor Semi-Final – Kingaroy v Nanango / Wondai

Kaia Williams charges the Kingaroy defensive line … Williams scored two tries for Nanango / Wondai

The U16s Red Ants wound up their 2016 season on Saturday despite a game performance against the combined Nanango / Wondai team.

Unfortunately, neither Wondai or Nanango had sufficient players to make up an U16 team in 2016, hence the birth of the combined team … and the experiment seems to have worked well in the four-team competition.

The combined team defeated Kingaroy 18-10, and will now play Cherbourg next weekend to decide the second spot in the Grand Final.

Nanango / Wondai tries were scored by Kaia Williams (2), Jesse Smith and Jack Scott. Jakeb Mead kicked one goal.

Kingaroy tries were scored by Angus Allery and Taylor Stead. Allery kicked one goal.
