Kingaroy’s Dianne Reed and Murgon’s Carol Watters were skips in the Champion of Champions Fours competition, which was won by the Murgon team 30-16

The Burnett Ladies Champion of Champions competition which was held at the Kingaroy Bowls Club from Tuesday to Saturday last week drew a good roll-up.

This year players from Kingaroy, Murgon, Binjour, Mundubbera, Wondai, Gayndah and Yarraman took part in the Fours, Pairs and Singles competitions.

In all, six clubs competed in the Fours and Pairs competitions, and four clubs took part in the Singles.

The Fours competition was won by Murgon this year.

In the finals, Murgon’s team of Gertie Ehrl, Lyn Munday, Bev Henness and Carol Watters defeated the Kingaroy team of Charmaine MacLeod, Bronwyn Grant, Aymee Bellert and Dianne Reed 30-16.

In Pairs, Mundubbera’s Selina Druery (skip) and Marj Linsket proved too strong for Murgon’s Carol Watters (skip) and Bev Henness.

And in Singles, Anne Faulkner from Gayndah had a 25-17 win against Selina Druery.

The winners of all three competitions will now go on to compete in the Group 5 Zone competition at Nambour, representing the Burnett against players from Wide Bay and the Sunshine Coast.

Kingaroy Bowls Club’s next major event will be the Country Bowls Weekend for female bowlers on the weekend of September 10-11.

It offers $2400 in prize money, and nomination fees are $160 for teams of four players.

Kilcoy News

The Men’s Pennants were played at Bribie Island recently, with one team winning and one losing for an overall win to Kilcoy.

The next Men’s Pennants round will be held at Kilcoy against Caboolture Lakes.

The teams are:

  • Peter Stanton, Jamie Mitchell, Noel Lanes and Tony Gray
  • Bill Edwards, Leigh Irwin, Jeff Welden and Greg Staniforth.

Ken Litherland (a sub for John Glanvill) and Noel Lanes competed in the District Champion of Champion Pairs at Bribie Island on Sunday, July 17 where they were narrowly defeated By Bribie Island.

Maxine Wilcox and Kim Donovan also played in the District Champion of Champion Pairs on Tuesday, July 19.

They did not win their match but enjoyed the experience.

At home the same day, Noel Lanes defeated Kelly Charters in the Star of the Green in a very close game.

Noel will now go on to play Pam Taylor on August 2 – and since the jackpot didn’t go off, there’ll be $164 available on August 2 too.

In social bowls the winners for the day were Jenny Edwards and John Worrall, who defeated Horst Myer and Elayne Moat 28-18.

There was a big roll-up at Nanango Bowls Club on Wednesday, July 13 for Trophy Day.

The event took the form of two games of 12 ends, with scoring one for an end and six for a win.

The Final of the Championship Triples was played on Tuesday, July 19.

Defending Champions Brian Havell, Allan Wright and Glen Yeates were too strong for Greg Pogson, Athol Jensen and Jim Fowler.

After eight ends it was almost one-way traffic. with the final score 26-11.

This win gave Allan Wright a clean sweep in the Club Championships.

This year Allan has had wins in the Singles, Pairs, Triples, and Fours, along with the District Champion of Champions Singles – well done!

The Burnett District Bowls Association conducted their annual pennants over the weekend.

Matches were held at Gayndah on Saturday and Murgon on Sunday.

Participating clubs entered two teams of four players and the matches were played over 18 ends, with the scoring one for each rink won plus two for an outright win.

Results:

  • Game 1: Kingaroy 4 Tansey 0; Gayndah 3 Murgon 1; Nanango 3 Wondai 1
  • Game 2: Nanango 4 Gayndah 0; Murgon 3.5 Kingaroy 0.5; Wondai 3 Tansey 1
  • Game 3: Gayndah 3 Kingaroy 1; Murgon 3 Wondai 1;. Nanango 3 Tansey 1
