The Burnett Blues – the northern of the two South Burnett teams taking part in this year’s Toowoomba Rugby League U18s competition – will be keen to knock off Valleys in their top-of-the-table clash to be played in Toowoomba on Saturday.
Toowoomba Valleys are in top spot on the ladder with 28 points.
The Burnett Blues are just four points behind in second so a win this weekend would put them in a strong position ahead of the finals.
It will be a tough game for the U18s Blues side, which is made up of players from the Murgon Mustangs and Cherbourg Hornets, as Valleys have been defeated only once this season, in Round 3 against Warwick.
The Blues added to their points tally last weekend with an easy win over the Conpak Burnett Whites – the southern South Burnett team – at T.J. O’Neill Oval in Kingaroy on Saturday.
At half-time in the local derby, the Blues were leading 40-10 but this had blown out to 62-18 by full-time.
Blues’ tries were scored by Elwyn Fewquandie (3), Steven Langton-Watcho, Lloyd Hopkins, Errol Simpson, Kasey Lynas, Peter Langton, Barry Tapau-Fewquandie, Maurice Fisher, Ralph Gyemore and Dylan Wilson. Gyemore kicked seven goals.
Ralph Gyemore is currently leading the Blues’ point scoring list with an impressive 234 points so far this season, from 17 tries and 83 goals.
Errol Simpson has proven to be a try-scoring machine for the Blues, notching up 26 tries in 16 rounds but Elwyn Fewquandie isn’t far behind, with 19.
Whites’ tries on Saturday were scored by Adam Geiger (2) , Mitchell Case and Connor Sullivan. Kirby Rubesaame kicked one goal.
The Conpak Burnett Whites are currently sitting in ninth position in the 13-team competition with six rounds of fixtures games still to be played.
Stephen Munt (9 tries), Ryan Jacobs (8), Adam Geiger (8) and Mitchell Case (7) have been the most prolific try scorers for Whites, with Kirby Rubesaame kicking 26 goals.
Whites were due to play Border this weekend, but as the South Burnett team was unavailable on Saturday and the Stanthorpe side was unavailable on Sunday, the match has been cancelled.
