Kingaroy Red Ant Rory Mackenzie puts the first points on the board in the game against Gayndah
Chris Holmes takes the score to 38-0

No one could ever accuse the Gayndah Gladiators of lacking in courage after the performance they put on at Kingaroy’s TJ O’Neill Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Central Burnett team brought down a team of “Old Boys” for an exhibition match against an equally veteran Kingaroy side.

This game was played as part of the warm-up program to the main A Grade match of the day, between Gayndah and Kingaroy.

Sadly, an undermanned Gladiators’ side had to call on some of the Old Boys to don their green and gold guernseys again to fill in during the A Grade match.

The game went as could be expected, but the Gladiators never gave up … although in the dying stages of the game, the ref had to give up any attempt at enforcing the 10m rule!

Half-time score was 44-0, and when the full-time siren went it was 102-0.

Not a pretty sight, but the Gladiators were applauded as they left the field by the Kingaroy crowd and the Red Ants team who appreciated that they had stuck around for the full 80 minutes.

It’s probably academic, but Kingaroy tries were scored by Chris Holmes (4), Brody Hatchman (3), Jye Thorley (3),  Brodie Litfin (2), Rory Mackenzie,  Jye Hopkins, Mitch Crossley,  Brady Roberts, Jayden Jarvis and Josh Flood.  Conversions were kicked by Mitch Crossley (9), Marty McCracken (3) and Brody Hatchman (3).

Gayndah Gladiators Old Boys defeated Kingaroy Red Ants Old Boys 24-12; the game was played across two 20-minute halves, much to all the players’ relief!
