New automated number plate recognition (APNR) technology is allowing police to automatically detect unregistered vehicles.

Kingaroy Police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Duane Frank said the APNR equipment was now used in all traffic police cars in the South Burnett.

The cameras can scan an entire road to read and check numberplates, which left no place for unregistered vehicle owners to hide.

The technology will work regardless of whether the scanned vehicles are moving or parked.

The equipment helped police detect four unregistered vehicles in the Wondai area last weekend.

Snr Sgt Frank said police also detected two unlicensed drivers, along with an alleged drug driver who tested positive for cannabis.
