More than 500 junior rugby league players, officials and volunteers from throughout the Central Division converged on Kingaroy over the weekend to take part in the inaugural Central Division Junior Carnival.
Four regional teams attended the event for the purpose of selecting Central Crows teams to compete at the State Junior Carnival, which will be held later this month.
The competition was held in five divisions – U13s boys, U14s boys, U14s girls, U16s boys and U16s girls – between the Wide Bay Bulls, Sunshine Coast Falcons, South West Mustangs and Central Queensland Capras.
Kingaroy’s Red Ants acted as host club for the event, but there were so many players T.J. O’Neill was unable to accommodate them all and the adjoining Lyle Vidler Oval was also put into service for the event.
A Red Ants spokesman said the club was “extremely grateful” to Kingaroy’s cricket and AFL clubs for their assistance in making their grounds available for the event.
Central Division Manager Glenn Ottaway said the focus of the carnival was on positive participation.
“The program was created to provide as many participants as possible with an opportunity to be part of the representative pathway,” he said.
“While all teams were there to compete, we were very focused on ensuring the carnival was more about a positive experience for those that attended.”
To meet the demand for accommodation demand, the Division used the company Tent City to set up a tent city in the main ring of the nearby Kingaroy Showgrounds, which was converted into a makeshift camping ground and home for all the weekend’s participants.
“Not only does this environment create a great atmosphere around the carnival, but it also alleviates the pressure on local accommodation,” Mr Ottaway.
Many of the players’ families also travelled to the South Burnett for the weekend to watch their children play.
The QRL streamed matches live over the Internet over the weekend so that supporters could track the action as it happened.
South Burnett players playing in the Wide Bay Bulls sides were:

Local players Heather Sandow (U14s Girls) and Thomas Springate (U16s Boys) were both selected for Central Crows in the State competition.
Both are members of the Kingaroy Red Ants.
PS: The South West Mustangs had the best of the weekend, winning the U13s and U16s Boys and U14s Girls competitions. The Sunshine Coast Falcons took top honours in the U14s Boys, and the Central Queensland Capras won the U16s Girls.
