About 40 Year 11 and 12 students from Saint Mary’s Catholic College travelled to the University of the Sunshine Coast last week to experience the different pathways available to them if they choose to pursue tertiary studies.
The students spent the day observing the university’s facilities.
They were able to see how nursing students learn practical skills in the latest state of the art classroom – a simulation hospital ward that includes training with “patients” (robotic mannequins) that have a pulse, breathe, blink their eyes, cough, talk, and even sweat.
Student were then taken to the university’s robotics and gaming facility where they were shown the latest advances in virtual reality and 3D printing.
After lunch, they were given a presentation about how they could enter the university.
“I didn’t realise how many different pathways I could take to gain university entrance,” Year 11 student Sajeewa Ranasinghe said.
The university visit was organised by Saint Mary’s recently-appointed Career and Employment Transition Coach, Ms Trudy Brynes.
The day was a great learning experience for students, who gained valuable knowledge about university life.
