Gubbi Gubbi elders have met with Gympie mayor Mick Curran to assure him last week’s incident at the Gympie Council Chambers was not condoned by the local Aboriginal community.

Aunty Olive Bennett, Wayne Croydon and Barb Ferguson spoke to Mayor Curran on Monday to dissociate the indigenous community from the protest during which three people allegedly became involved in a fracas at the Council office while trying to hand Council staff an “eviction notice”.

Aunty Olive told local media the man involved “obviously had his own agenda and it was nothing to do with local indigenous people”.

Three people were charged following the disturbance.
