Burrandowan Races is over for another year … with organisers toasting the best crowd they’ve had at the bush track in a decade.
Picnic Race Club secretary Carolyn Stone told southburnett.com.au that takings were still being counted but she believed at least 1700 people had come through the gate.
The camping area adjacent to the track was turned into a mini-city, packed with campervans and tents.
The morning started with the traditional clay target shooting.
The High Tea in the hall was a highlight, with guests being served tea and treats on the finest bone china, some belonging to Carolyn’s great-grandmother-in-law.
(She reported it all made it back home in one piece!)
Three special people were also presented with Life Memberships of the Burrandowan Picnic Race Club.
Former Nanango Race Club president John Lee was honoured, as were past Burrandowan club president Mark Phillips and his wife Heather.
In the evening, the barbecue pit and live music until midnight topped off another big day at the races.

Fashions Of The Field
Even more important than the racing for some visitors to Burrandowan is the Fashions of the Field competition, staged on a special catwalk adjacent to the dining hall.
A special guest compere for this year’s event was Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson, who was enjoying her first ever Burrandowan Races (although she probably wasn’t enjoying being lobbied by all and sundry about the tick line and vegetation management laws!)
Prizes were awarded to the Best Dressed Couple, Best Dressed Classic Lady, Best Dressed Contemporary Lady and Best Dressed Gentleman.
Guest spotters wandered through the crowd from noon to invite suitably dressed entrants to take part in each category.
There was also a special prize, donated by Clovely Estate wines, awarded to a trio of visitors for their efforts to brighten everyone’s day with their colourful outfits.

An Unlucky Jockey
Everyone had a great day at the annual Burrandowan Races on Saturday … the punters, the organisers, the fashion aficianados; everyone, that is, except Nanango apprentice jockey Hannah Phillips.
Phillips originally had a full card of five races booked.
The day started badly for her when she was overweight for her ride in Race 1, Chance To Dream. Veteran jockey Lyall Appo picked up the slot.
In Race 2, Phillips was aboard equal favourite, top weight Captain Clayton trained by her father Barry. Her mount bumped another shortly after the start and subsequently ran last.
In Race 3, Phillips failed to claim her full weight allowance for her ride on Media Savvy, which also didn’t run a place.
After this race, she was examined by QAS paramedics and stood down from her remaining rides.
Stewards fined her a total of $400 for the weight issues in Race 1 and Race 3 and told her she would require a medical certificate prior to resuming racing.
To top off what was had become a spectacularly awful day for Phillips, her booked ride in Race 4, Spice Of Life, then greeted the judge in first place.
The winning jockey who had secured the ride, Stephanie Lacy, was presented with a silver bracelet by Cr Kathy Duff as part of a Burrandowan racing tradition.
Hannah will be wishing she had just stayed at home …
