The South Burnett Domestic Violence Strategy Group is encouraging everyone in the region – in schools, businesses and other organisations – to wear a white shirt next Wednesday (May 18) as part of the campaign against domestic violence.
White wristbands will also be handed out at high schools in Nanango, Kingaroy and Murgon on the same day.
May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month and several events have been planned in the region to raise awareness.
Groups involved in activities so far include: Bill Hull Car Centre, Centacare Community Connections, Centacare St Mary’s, CROW-FM, Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, Deb Frecklington MP, Fiedler Brothers Plumbing, Goodstart Early Learning Centre, Graham House Community Centre, Huston Ford, Kingaroy Probation and Parole, Kingaroy SHS, Like Home Early Learning Centre, Murgon SHS, Nanango SHS, Nigel Sequeira, Partners in Recovery, Pursers Coaches, Relationships Australia, South Burnett CTC, South Burnett Regional Council, South Burnett Times, St Mary’s Catholic College, St Mary’s Parish and Studio J.
“The group has come up with the slogan ‘Respectful communities starts with me’” and we are hoping that if enough people around town are wearing their white shirts; people (particularly children) will start asking questions,” Erin Jeffs, from Centacare said.
“Opening dialogue and raising awareness is what we hope to gain from the day.”
