A special meeting of the South Burnett Regional Council will be held on Thursday afternoon to vote on the proposal put forward by a private operator to take over operation of the Lady Bjelke-Petersen Private Hospital.

On the eve of the Local Government elections, then-Mayor Wayne Kratzmann announced that a hospital operator had expressed interest in taking over the facility.

He said businesswoman Gina Rinehart’s $600,000 support had helped to attract a state-of-the-art Brisbane hospital operator.

Mayor Kratzmann said he was always confident an operator would  be found for the Lady Bjelke-Petersen Hospital, but the support by Mrs Rinehart – and the media coverage that this received – had attracted more interest.

However, as the Council was in caretaker mode it would be up to the new council to vote whether to transfer the licence to this new operator.

Recently elected Mayor Keith Campbell said on Tuesday that councillors would be briefed by Economic Development Manager Phil Harding about the proposal ahead of Thursday’s meeting.

“The hospital issue is one of the incomplete projects from the previous administration which needs to be attended to,” Mayor Campbell said.

The special meeting will be held at 2:00pm.
