The damaged and sagging footpath awning in Kingaroy Street on Tuesday

March 23, 2016

The South Burnett Regional Council has placed safety cones along a section of Kingaroy Street to allow urgent repairs to be made to a damaged and sagging shop awning.

A Council spokesman said on Wednesday that Council had been monitoring the condition of the awning for a while and had formally notified the owner of the building to make repairs.

Council staff met with the owner and a contractor at the site on Tuesday.

The safety cones are to keep vehicles away from the structure to allow temporary propping to be carried out immediately “to ensure it does not come away from the building”.

Repairs would then be carried out while the street is quiet over Easter, possibly starting as early as Good Friday.

southburnett.com.au was alerted to the sagging awning by a reader on Tuesday who was concerned that cars were being kept away from the area but there were no warning signs for pedestrians.

In 2012, a man was killed and five pedestrians were injured when a shop awning suddenly collapsed at Burleigh Heads; in 2007 a man was killed at Balgowlah in Sydney when a shop awning collapsed during heavy rain.

  1. I hope we don’t get a “band aid” solution. The problem runs much deeper than a few nails and a coat of paint will fix
