A head-on collision on the Wide Bay Highway on Tuesday afternoon has claimed the life of one of Goomeri’s best-known residents.
Pam Brunjes, 71, died when two vehicles collided about one kilometre east of Wide Bay Creek near Cinnibar about 3:45pm.
She was the sole occupant in her vehicle; the two people in the other vehicle were flown by separate helicopters in a stable condition to Nambour and Royal Brisbane hospitals.
Mrs Brunjes’ death has left an aching hole in the Goomeri community.
For many years, Pam and her husband Merv ran Brunjes Livestock Transport and a bulk fuel supply company.
She also served as Goomeri Show Society secretary for many years, helped at the annual Goomeri Christmas Carnival and Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, was a special guest at Goomeri P-10 award nights and was a familiar face behind the counter of the Goomeri Lions’ famous chip van.
She was an active member of the Gympie VIEW Club, which raises funds for The Smith Family.
Mrs Brunjes also submitted community news from the Goomeri Lions and Goomeri Golf Club to local newspapers, including southburnett.com.au
In 2010, Mrs Brunjes was named Gympie Regional Council’s Citizen of the Year for her 40 years of community work in the region.
At the time, Cr Rae Gâté praised Mrs Brunjes for her positive outlook, enthusiasm and commitment.
And in another honour, in May last year she was the top secret “special guest” selected to open Goomeri Show Society’s new pavilion.
She is survived by her husband Merv and two children.
