A quiet change happened in Kingaroy’s leafy O’Neill Square last Thursday afternoon.
After a festive season break of almost six weeks, the Makers, Bakers and Growers Markets re-opened for their third year in business.
The weekly markets, which run in O’Neill Square every Thursday between noon and 6:30pm, were established in late 2013 by the Growing The Burnett horticultural group.
They aimed to provide an outlet for the region’s small acreage farmers to sell their fruit, vegetables and home-made jams and chutneys; and for South Burnett craftworkers to sell their wares.
But when Growing The Burnett decided to wind down last year, Sandy Towell from Boots’n Bulldust – Seeds of Hope stepped in to ensure the popular concept kept going.
She renamed the weekly get-together the Makers, Bakers and Growers Markets, but otherwise kept to the original intention of providing an outlet for locals to buy and sell fresh locally-grown foods, locally produced crafts and hard to get health food items.
Last Thursday the markets made their first outing for 2016, minus a couple of regular stall-holders who’ll be returning shortly.
Stalls offering everything from home-made 3D cards to fresh fruit and veg, stylish crafts and health-enhancing products rubbed shoulders with a fresh coffee van that also offered sandwiches and wraps.
Very shortly the popular Reel Pizzas will be back offering their delicious, freshly-made pizzas too.

Boots’n Bulldust – Seeds of Hope is a not-for-profit association which supports locals living with depression or mental illness and those at risk of suicide.
“The funds raised from the management of the markets go towards these objectives,” Sandy said.
“So by supporting the Makers, Bakers and Growers Markets you are supporting locals in a variety of ways.”
