A search for an elderly farmer missing in floodwaters south-west of Monto has ended in tragedy.

The 80-year-old man, from ‘Lagoona’ at Glenleigh, had been on horseback mustering cattle to higher ground on Friday when he was reported missing.

Police, SES and local residents began a search on Friday.

An RACQ CareFlight helicopter joined in at dawn on Saturday.

The helicopter crew spotted the drowned horse in floodwaters less than a kilometre from the homestead.
