Columboola wildlife rescuer Ivan Edney, 69, was killed in a head-on crash on the Warrego Highway near Chinchilla on Thursday.

Mr Edney was well-known in the South Burnett for his efforts rescuing injured wildlife.

It is believed he was on is way to Miles to retrieve a possum when the incident occurred.

Also killed in the crash was a 79-year-old Taroom woman.

Mr Edney would transfer sick and injured animals from rural areas to Australia Zoo at Beerwah, often making multiple trips a week.

He was nominated for a Pride of Australia Medal in 2010 for his wildlife work.
