The Crawford family on their way to the first Wondai Show in 1911 … the Wondai Show Society want to prepare a Centenary book to celebrate the Show’s 100th outing in 2017

January 11, 2016

The Wondai Show will be making its 100th outing in 2017, and the Wondai Show Society would like the community’s help to produce a special Centenary book to mark the occasion.

“The first Wondai Show was held on May 10-11 in 1911,” Show Society secretary Noreen Brier said.

“Owing to drought, depression and war, shows were not held in some years.

“But our 100th show is scheduled for 2017, and we’d really like the community’s help to make it something special.”

In the early days, the Wondai Showground was also the town’s sports ground and it incorporated a concrete cricket pitch, a football field and a nine hole golf course with sand greens.

Today – in addition to the annual Show – the South Burnett Race Club conducts horse race meetings at the grounds; the Burnett Kennel Club hold regular Championship Dog Shows; the local Pony Club has its clubhouse there; and many other clubs and community groups make good use of the modern facilities.

The Showgrounds are also being increasingly used by campers and caravanners.

The Centenary book will catalogue not only the major milestones of the Show’s long history, but also the development of the Showgrounds and the people who played a part in the process.

“We would like to record memories and stories pertaining to the Show over the years,” Noreen said.

“We want the Centenary book to be more than just a chronological history of the Show – we want to add the personal element and celebrate the people who have been so instrumental in the Show’s development and success.”

If anyone has memorabilia, photos or other materials that might be included in the Centenary book, they can contact Noreen on 0400-305-272 or email her.
