Yarraman Bowls Club has certainly had its ups and downs this year, but now look like they will finish on a high note.
Early in the season the club lost key members of their executive – the President, Providore and Greens Director – and the Secretary told the committee he would be finishing up at the end of the year, too.
The weather throughout the year has also been unfriendly with a number of bouts of heavy rain, strong winds and some hail.
This caused poor attendances at social competitions such as Scroungers, Men’s Sausage sizzle nights and some of the regular trophy matches.
But December has lifted the committee’s spirits.
Infrastructure repairs to the building and storage shed have been completed; the club’s championship calendar is complete; and several new faces have appeared on the volunteer list.

Yarraman’s major competition of the year is always the Rosalie Fours carnival in December.
This popular competition was initiated by the Rosalie Shire Council some years ago, and since the 2008 local government amalgamations has been sponsored by the club.
Sixteen teams filled the green last weekend for this year’s event, with players coming from as far away as Kallangur, Bribie Island, Toowoomba and Chinchilla.
Some teams have been regulars since the event was established, and rivalry was intense.
The weekend was highlighted by the attendance of the state MP Deb Frecklington, who wished Club President Neil Johnston a successful tournament.
A Calcutta raffle preceded the start bell, and the raffle prizes were “ownership” of a competing team.
Bids were then taken by an auctioneer for the raffle ticket.
It was a noisy ceremony with bids yelled from the floor, but some canny punters were well rewarded by the result.
The gallery who came to watch the weekend’s competition was kept entertained, particularly with the matches in round five.
One of these matches ensured the winners would figure in the prize list after Yarraman skip Kev Profke, who had four wins from the four games on the board, played skip Ray Chicken from Crows Nest, who had three and a half wins.
Chicken’s team won the thriller, finishing the weekend with four and a half points and +93, which relegated Profke’s team to fourth position on the scoreboard with only four wins +103.
It was a very interesting finish to the Rosalie Fours Carnival, with a three-way tie for the placings.
A countback on points decided the overall winner.
The winners were the Wondai team of Alwyn Litzow (skip), David Cecil, Linda Cecil and Terry Kilford, who clocked up 4 1/2 wins +106
The Crows Nest team of skip Ray Chicken, Trevor Gillies, Peter Maker and Tony Ryan came second with 4 1/2 wins +93; and the Nanango team of skip Alec Barsby, Warren Arthur, Delwyn Powys and Bev Henness came third with 4 1/2 wins +91.
Round winners:
- 1st Round: Samford: John McDonald, Neil Currell, Di Currell and Tim Cash
- 2nd Round: Chinchilla
- 3rd Round: Max Postle, K. Appleton, D. Forte and J. Blandford
- 4th Round: Kev Profke, Merv Fitch, Brian Havell and Doris Drew

One of the most exciting matches on Yarraman’s club championship calendar occurred on Wednesday – the Final of the mixed triples – and it was a bottler.
The match was a particular treat for the gallery because it so tight it was decided by the last bowl.
Kay Dugdell, George Wolski and Brian Dugdell – who were gone for all money through most of the match – came from nowhere on the 19th end to storm home, downing Allison Anderson, Jenny Moore and John Moore.
The 19th was truly the turning point of the game.
Moore had a comfortable lead of 21-13 but Dugdell dead-ended the game by taking the kitty off the rink.
In the replay of the 19th, Dugdell then scored two.
On the next end, Dugdell put the kitty in the ditch for five. This really put the pressure on Moore with the score now sitting at 21-20.
Then on the final end, Wolski took the kitty to within inches of the ditch making the team two up.
Moore was unable to change the score-board with his last bowl and Dugdell’s team shook hands as winners 22-21.
On Yarraman’s Blackboard:
- Wed, Dec 16: Ladies Club Bowls – 9:00am
- Thu, Dec 17: Social Bowls – starts with a sausage sizzle 5:30pm
- Sat, Dec 19 – Club Christmas Party with Club Select Mixed Triples at 12:30pm; finger food after the game; presentation of 2015 trophies; and Christmas Raffle Draw

Kingaroy News
Bob Bougoure sponsored the Kingaroy Bowls Club Triples on Sunday, giving something back to the club he has called home for nearly two years.
He says two of the reasons he keeps coming back game after game are the good company at the club and the shared enjoyment of bowls.
Even though there were only 18 players, it still left room for fun and excitement on the greens in the three games, and the scores showed how even the six teams were (well, four anyway…).
Scoring was six points for the win and one point for each end won, with Bob throwing in a bonus of a free beer for the first six touches.
Results in winning order:
- Bob Hammond, Dave Barwick and John Coppard (17) def. Linda Clutterbuck, John Lacey and Col Kratzman (10) 21-15
- Fred Keding, Glady Slatter and Geoff Clutterbuck (15) def. Des Richards, Val Jeppersen and Ray Maclaren (12) 28-26
- Bob Bougoure, Paul Marychurch and Alan Irwin (14) def. Marj Moore, Maureen Semgreen and Bruce Johnston (13) 21-21
Thank you again Bob for a great day!
