Yarraman’s annual Rosalie Fours competition attracted a full green over the weekend in near ideal weather conditions.

Players came from Southbrook, Drayton, Oakey, Chinchilla, Bribie Island, Bongaree, and three teams entered from Kallangur in Brisbane.

Local South Burnett clubs supported the event.

After almost four inches of rain in past weeks the green was very green, and the green-keeper’s efforts attracted favourable comment.

The Rosalie Fours competition was originally sponsored by Rosalie Shire Council, but since the 2008 local government amalgamations it has been perpetuated by the Yarraman Bowls Club.

The competition’s format is five games of 17 ends played over the weekend, with scoring one point for each end won and five points for each game won.

The day starts off with a Calcutta Raffle, where the winners of “ownership” of each of the sixteen teams is drawn by a raffle.

Bids are then taken for the Calcutta prize moneys, and bidding for the team favourites is quite competitive.

Prizes for the first three teams are awarded at a closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon, and the results of this year’s competition will be highlighted in next week’s column

Not a good day for lawn bowls …
(Photo: John Lacey)

The Ladies Christmas break-up match last week saw one game of fours and one game of triples played … well, almost.

Peter Neilsen, Norma Rook, Bronwyn Grant and Di Reed played John Lacey, Glady Slatter, Val Crawford and Beryl Woods.

And Linda Clutterbuck, Paul Marychurch and Val Jeppersen played Darcy Munro, Richard Patterson and Sharon Yeates.

However it turned out to be not the best of days to play lawn bowls.

A thunderstorm which erupted over the greens around 10:30am dumped a bucketload on everyone – enough to change the green’s rating from slow to underwater.

The games were abandoned.

Thursday’s club selected triples had better luck, though, with 20 bowlers hitting the greens for two games of Triples and two games of Pairs.

Scoring was four points for a win and one point for each end won

Results in winning order:

  • Bevan Askew, B. Croft and Col Kratzman (17) def. Keith Muller, Col McBride and Alan Irwin (8) 17-14
  • Darcy Munro and John Coppard (16) def. Bob Hammond and Kev Raffin (9) 21-14
  • Fred Keding, Glady Slatter and David Croft (16) def. Des Richards, John Lacey and Ray MacLaren (9) 20-15
  • Peter Neilsen and Geoff Clutterbuck (14) def. Hugh Harrison and Bruce Johnston (11) 18-17

Last Tuesday’s Trophy Day saw a good rollup.

Two games of 12 ends were played, with scoring one for an end and four for a win (if a countback was required, it would be done on scores).

Next best was a close call: Joe Aglizzio and Paul Merrychurch scored 22 pts +28 to narrowly edge out Kel Fisher and Dave Clapperton on 22 pts +25.

  • Bob Hammond and Henry Bliesner – 18pts
