Some people might say that Spring has sprung … but according to my thermometer, Spring has gone and Summer has definitely arrived, with temperatures in the high thirties becoming quite common over the last week or so.

The weather has affected attendances on the region’s bowls greens, and will probably continue to do so until we get acclimatised the summer weather.

With Christmas break-ups, awards ceremonies and a couple of major tournaments on the calendar, I’m sure there are many bowlers looking for some cooler weather.

Anyway, here’s what’s been happening around the region’s bowls clubs recently.

Kingaroy News

Lawn Bowls is a challenging and strategic game which tests both your mental and physical capabilities, but there is a part of the game that is hard to overcome.

That is where your score hits a psychological wall and you don’t advance for 5 or 10 ends or the rest of the game.

The number could be 5, 8, 11 or the dreaded 13.

A good example of this was in Kingaroy’s Tuesday Social Triples were the teams of Linda Clutterbuck, Brigitt Kung and Dave Barwick played Dave Ferguson, Geoff Clutterbuck and Alan Irwin.

The Irwin team got off to a flyer with the score being 5-3 after 5 ends.

And in the 6th end the team found the Golden Grail with a score of 8, which made it 13-3 … but that was where it was all to come undone.

With the wall in front and the Irwin team not able to scale it, the Barwick team chiselled away at the deficit and finally hit the lead 15-13 in the 12th end, with the final score after 14 ends being 19-13.

The wall had done its job and bought another team to their knees.
