Wild storms and power blackouts failed to deter 25 of the region’s best photographers gathering at the Blackbutt State School Hall on Saturday afternoon to pick the South Burnett’s best photos of the year.
The photographers were all members of the South Burnett’s four photography clubs – from Blackbutt, Nanango, Kingaroy and Wondai – and they were competing in the Cliff Krebbs Memorial Interclub Print Competition.
They had gathered in Blackbutt because it was the Blackbutt Camera Club’s turn to host the annual event.
As things turned out, the weather played a much bigger part in this year’s Krebbs Memorial than anyone expected.
Minutes after the competition got underway, heavy rain on the school hall’s roof drowned out the welcome speech and opening remarks by Blackbutt Camera Club president Gerry van Moorsel.
And shortly afterwards, a second storm front that passed over the town, ripping up trees and flooding parts of the CBD, caused a blackout.
Despite these difficulties, guests soldiered on and wound up having a very enjoyable afternoon.
As usual, each club was allowed to submit five images to each of the six categories that make up the competition.
This year the categories were Animals, Birds or Insects; People; Pictorial; Flora; Monochrome; and “On The Road”.
The 120 entries were assessed by Brisbane judges John North EFIAP/S, FAPS, SSAPS, PSQA; John Marshall EFIAP, FAPS, PSQA; and Warren Vievers EFIAP, FAPS, SSAPS, PSQA.
They found it difficult to choose a clear-cut winner in two of the categories.
Under the competition’s rules, the ties resulted in all this year’s winners receiving Certificates Of Achievement.
Next year the competition will be hosted by the Nanango and District Camera Club.
