The new-look $1.2 million Murgon Jubilee Swimming Pool will be officially opened with a free party this Saturday, October 17.

The pool re-opened to the public on Monday, but the official launch is designed to encourage users to inspect the upgrade at first hand.

“This project has given Murgon and residents in the surrounding community a pool which will meet the needs of the community now and into the future,” Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said today.

“That gives us good reason to celebrate.”

Council used $415,000 of funding from the Get Playing Plus Project to help pay for the upgrade, which includes a beach-style entrance for the toddler pool, more shaded seating, and fully accessible changing, shower and toilet facilities for people with right-hand and left-hand disabilities.

The upgrade also includes a makeover of the pool concourse, seating, amenities, first aid room, and kiosk.

On Saturday, gates will open at 10:00 am with free admission for all.

At 10:30 am, Mayor Kratzmann will officially open the facility and unveil a commemorative plaque, before giving kids – including big kids – the go-ahead to take to the water.

Divisional Councillor Kathy Duff will be on hand to give out sunscreen, water bottles and other goodies, while Murgon Swimming Club members will run fun activities throughout the day.

Other Councillors will also attend, joined by special guests including representatives from surrounding schools, child care centres, Blue Care, businesses, and the Cherbourg Community Council.

Planned activities include water aerobics, water relay and other trials, along with a community morning tea and sausage sizzle lunch.

There will be a sign-on for the Murgon Orcas Swimming Club, swimming lessons and fitness classes running on the day.

The Orcas will also be selling drinks and icy cups to raise money for their November swimming carnival.

Details about learn to swim classes, aqua box, aqua aerobics, squad training and other activities that will be available at the pool this season can be obtained by phoning (07) 4168-1754.
