South Burnett And Cherbourg On ShowOctober 3, 2015

It’s finally here … the October long weekend, home of the huge “South Burnett and Cherbourg On Show” promotion! There’s 40 events in four days to explore, enjoy and keep your holiday dollars in the South Burnett.

The program officially kicked off on Friday night with the Wondai Acquisitive Art Show (congratulations to artist Robyn Dower for winning the $1500 top prize!) and a special South Burnett dinner at the Wondai Hotel.

But the calendar accelerates on Saturday … with everything from a huge Open Day at Murgon’s Dairy Museum to a big Battle of the Bands in Nanango, a folk festival at Maidenwell, campdraft at Cooyar and team-penning at Kilkivan.

Then there’s the Nanango Country Markets (always a great way to start a Saturday morning), a “Picnic in the Paddock” at the Bunya Red Farm at Inverlaw and High Tea at Dimitie’s in Wondai.

At Cherbourg, the Ration Shed Museum – which should be on everyone’s bucket list – will be holding an Open Day, and the nearby Yurri Muntha Cafe nearby will be open for morning and afternoon teas and light lunches.

Cherbourg’s Muddy Flats band and the Wakka Wakka dancers will be performing at Yallakool on Saturday night.

On Sunday, there’s plenty of places to chow down: Taste South Burnett in Kingaroy will be hosting the Big Burnett Brunch, there’ll be a Lunch in the Country Smorgasbord at Dimitie’s Cottage at Wondai, Music In The Mountains at Elz Bistro in the Bunya Mountains and a Long Lunch with live music at Mulanah Gardens.

Historic Taabinga Homestead and Ringsfield Cottage will also be open for tours on Sunday.

There’s also action around the South Burnett’s famous wineries over the weekend: Sax at Moffatdale Ridge, live music and a gourmet barbecue at Cranes; pizza, wines and wine master class tours at Kingsley Grove, and the Barambah Valley Markets on Sunday at Dusty Hill Vineyard with live music by Rowan Edwards.

Art lovers will enjoy the exhibitions at Wondai and Kingaroy galleries.

This is only a taste of some of the special events that are happening over the next few days.

There’s also a couple of events – technically not part of the long weekend program – which will be bringing people into the South Burnett.

In the skies over Kingaroy, there’ll be gliders practising for next week’s Queensland Gliding Championships. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, the gliders came make some very spectacular approaches to their landing strip in the afternoon over the roads around the airport precinct.

And in Nanango, South Burnett Kart Hire on the D’Aguilar Highway will be hosting Round 9 of the Auskart Racing Championship from noon on Saturday and on Sunday morning. Admission for spectators is free.

In Blackbutt, the second annual R&R Rail Trail Duathlon will be held on the Rail Trail.
