Murgon’s Jubilee Swimming Pool will reopen on Monday, October 12 after a $1.1 million upgrade.

The pool was closed in July last year after an inspection found its buildings had become structurally unsound.

The South Burnett Regional Council budgeted $650,000 in last year’s Budget to replace them, but an extra $450,000 grant from the Department Of Sport and Recreation allowed it to develop a modern aquatic complex instead.

Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said the pool will be officially opened on Saturday, October 17 with a free party to encourage Murgon residents to come and inspect the state-of-the-art facilities.

“Residents have a lot to celebrate with this modern swimming complex, which will meet the community’s needs for many years to come,” Mayor Kratzmann said.

The upgrade includes new amenities with separate female, male, and unisex change rooms, showers and toilets, as well as two disability-accessible facilities.

“The unisex rooms mean mums and dads won’t have to worry when their young children need to use the amenities,” Mayor Kratzmann said.

“And the accessible rooms are designed so people can use the toilet and shower in the one room, with complete privacy and comfort.

“This new complex is something the whole community can be proud of.”

Other facilities include a kiosk, first aid room, storage room, and office.

There will be outdoor showers for quick rinse-offs before and after swimming, and a shade structure with undercover seating and tables between the main pool and the toddler pool.

The toddler pool will now have a beach-style entrance and shade cover, making it more enjoyable for tots.

Access to both pools will be easier and more accessible, too.

A new covered grandstand with seating has also been placed at the pool courtesy of the Murgon Orcas Swimming Club, who secured a separate $31,800 grant to fund it.

The official opening party will be at 10:00am with free admission, a sausage sizzle, activities, games, and giveaways.

Admission prices for the 2015/2106 swimming season remain unchanged.
