The South Burnett Saints have done it … bringing the Premiership Cup home to Kingaroy in just their third year back in the Darling Downs AFL competition.
The Saints were keen to erase memories of last year’s Grand Final 49-point loss to University.
This time around they faced the Dalby Swans in the Division 2 Grand Final, one of the few teams to have given them any trouble on the paddock during the 2015 season.
The Saints and Swans have played each other three times recently, with South Burnett winning one of the encounters easily, just scraping home in another and losing the third.
In the Grand Final clash, played at Toowoomba’s Heritage Oval on Saturday, the Saints got off to a breakaway start.
They led by 34 points at half-time after a great display of goal kicking by Dylan Bowater who booted home four majors.
But by the end of the third term, the Swans had sliced into the margin, with the South Burnett just ahead 8-6 (54) to 6-10 (46).
The Saints fought back after the change, fending off Dalby’s fightback and limiting them to just one behind before the full-time siren.
The final score was 10-9 (69) to 6-11 (47).
