New waste transfer stations at Hivesville and Durong will open on Monday (August 31).
South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said the region had one of the few councils committed to keeping transfer stations open for residents at a time when when other regions were closing them down.
“We have reacted to the needs of our community, who have told us that easy and convenient waste disposal is important to them,” Mayor Kratzmann said.
Hivesville and Durong residents will now dispose of their waste into the skip bins provided at the new facilities instead of the old landfill trenches.
Cr Kathy Duff demonstrated there is an easy way to empty wheelie bins into the skip bins … simply tip them sideways (see photo, above) and balance them on the edge of the bay.
Mayor Kratzmann said Council was continuing to provide free waste disposal for residents across the South Burnett, and had taken the extra step of abolishing costs to commercial operators.
“Pensioners told us that when they paid gardeners and tradespeople to mow their gardens and clean out their properties, and the commercial operators had to take their rubbish to the dump, they were passing on the costs to the pensioner. Our pensioners were hurting, so we’ve stopped that,” he said.
“It’s a move that benefits everyone in our community, but in particular the pensioners and the vulnerable, and they are a group that we have to look after.”
The new stations are large enough to meet the needs of a growing community well into the future.
