Bowlers from the Fraser Coast, Sunshine Coast and Burnett districts met at Kingaroy Bowls club recently to decide the Champion of Champions at the Zone level with the winners progressing to the State level.

Wondai Bowls Club were the Burnett representatives against Maryborough Services and Coolum Bowls Club, representing the Fraser Coast and Sunshine Coast respectively.

The round robin format was used with the team recording the most wins being the champions.

With two strong performances Fraser Coast defeated both of their opponents to take an unassailable two-nil lead, negating the need for the third game to be played

The recently introduced meetings between the two clubs is proving to be popular, and the concept of mixing the teams with players from both clubs is being well received.

Wednesday was Ladies Day, and the final of the Ladies Triples was played with Helene Johnson, Bev Profke and Di Currell defeating Ivy Wrembeck, Lorri Holmes and Robyn Diercke 27-12.

A Mixed Triples championships match was played Friday afternoon, and it saw John Moore, Jenny Moore and Alison Anderson defeat Helene Johnson, Kev Profke and Bev Profke 25-18.

Helene’s team was down 20-4 after 10 ends but came back to be three behind on the 20th.

But then Moore’s team scored on the last two ends to gain the winning numbers.

Meanwhile, Scroungers on Friday afternoon faced a three-way draw.

With the bell about to go they put the mat back down and played another end.

Lorri Holmes scored two on that end to take out the trophy. but failed to crack the jackpot.

Leading scores were Lorri Holmes 31, John Moore 29, and Jenny Moore 29.

Wednesday of last week was Pub Day, and it kicked off with a medal presentation ceremony when Harold Alford presented Darrel Coffee with his Super Veteran’s badge.

Pub Day results:

  • First Round Winners: Max Morrow, Kev Preece, Ken Litherland and Gina Ryder (Kilcoy)
  • Second Round: Graham Jewell, Gerry Mooney, Annette and Jenny La Rooij (Woodford)
  • Runners Up: Ian Hansen’s team from Maleny
  • Winners: Jenny Edwards, Leigh Irwin, Trudi Pratt and John Worrall (Kilcoy)

On Thursday and Friday the club held two days of Ladies Pennant matches, which saw some close games and tight struggles. But the final scoreboard favoured Woodford.

In Championship Games:

  • Ladies B Singles: Nelly Herbert def. Phyl Coffee in a very closely fought match, and Fay Vicary def. Val Wells
  • Mixed Triples: Greg Staniforth, Dozer Bechly and Trudi Pratt def. Bill Edwards, Leigh Irwin and Jenny Edwards

On Tuesday, Kilcoy ladies pennant teams travelled to Solander Lake and came away with a 46-33 win over the competition leaders. The return match will be played on Friday 21 August.

At home, three games of triples were played:

  • Michael Dunn, Kelly Charters and Adam Kelly def. Dennis Thomsen, Kathy Hill and Terry Pratten 22-12
  • Harold Alford, Ann Pope and Val Wells def. Liz Frawley, Grahame Derryman and Darrell Coffee 19-8
