The Blackbutt Tennis Club will be holding a public meeting this Thursday, August 20, to discuss the future of the Blackbutt Tennis Court.
Blackbutt has always been known as a tennis town and is justifiably proud of its many tennis champions, like the great Roy Emerson.
In the 1930s there were 14 tennis courts in Blackbutt and Benarkin, boasting 26 teams who played Pennants, A Grade, B Grade and C Grade.
Tennis was also a very popular sport in the local community.
A few weeks ago, Iris Crumpton from the Blackbutt and District Tourism and Heritage Association, posed the question on Facebook: “Who would like to play tennis at Blackbutt if the courts were revamped?”
Within two hours, Iris said, 40 people had replied.
“This must be a great sign for bringing tennis back to the Blackbutt district,” she said.
Thursday night’s meeting will be held at Nukku Nook near the Blackbutt Showgrounds, and will start at 7:00pm.
“The more people who can attend, the stronger the voice to bring tennis back to our town,” Iris said.
