Competition leaders Wondai ripped into the Murgon Mustangs in the second half to secure victory in their A Grade rugby league game played on Saturday.
The first half started quietly enough with neither side making any headway for more than 15 minutes.
The deadlock was finally broken when the Murgon fullback took a catch, ran around the Wolves’ defensive line and passed to Barwoo Fisher to score. Jameel Sullivan converted, and Murgon led 6-0.
Both sides were having trouble holding onto the ball with promising moves breaking down on the last pass.
With 18 minutes left in the half, Brendan List scored in the corner for the Wolves, followed a few minutes later by Luke Hedges. Danny Alberts converted both.
Murgon then went on the attack, crossing the Wondai line four times ahead of the break – but only Steven Watcho’s two groundings were rewarded with points, and neither were converted.
At half-time, the Mustangs had a slender 14-12 lead.
The second half was more fiery, with three players serving stints in the sin bin.
Murgon scored first, via Jameel Sullivan, but Luke Hedges quickly responded with his second.
With their home fans cheering, it was then all Wolves for the rest of the game.
Tries were scored by Brenton List, Tyrone Murray and Danny Alberts. Alberts added the extra points for all three, taking the final score to Wondai 34, Murgon 18.
