Brrrrr!!! It has been cold lately, hasn’t it? And it’s hard to play bowls with Ugg Boots on.

The cold weather – particularly the wind – affected player attendances at all the region’s greens this week.

In fact, on Friday in Yarraman, Scroungers was cancelled and only five brave souls turned up for the members’ draw.

Anyway, Kingaroy leads this week’s bleak winter bulletin:

Kingaroy News

After a great Winter Carnival in Kingaroy last weekend, the club returned to its normal bowls program of games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

And with frost on the ground, the speed of the greens was noticeably quicker.

Club numbers were down for the normally popular pairs comp on Tuesday.

There were only a couple of rinks in action:

  • Darcy Munro and Geoff Clutterbuck def. Alan Rogerson and Bob Robinson 16-7
  • Alex Callender and Kev Raffin 16 def. Bob Andrea and Alan Irwin 16-7

A triples and fours competition sponsored by Lady President Diane Reed on Wednesday was better supported.

Twenty-four players were on hand to take part in the fun day, with the winners determined by the highest winning margin.

The winners were Barry O’Brien, Greg Schulz, Richie Patterson and Val Jeppesen with a margin of 18.

Full results:

  • Barry O’Brien, Greg Schulz, Richie Patterson and Val Jeppesen def. Gladys Slatter, Dave Clapperton, Jim McCallum and Diane Reed 29-11
  • Bob Bougoure, Annette O’Brien and Beryl Woods def. Bess Thorp, Bruce Johnston and Maureen Semgreen 22-11
  • June Olsson, Paul Marychurch and Maureen Kemp def. John Lacey, Ray Maclaren and Glen Yeates 26-17

On Thursday, thirty-two players got together for the monthly visit from members of the Nanango Bowls Club.

Pairs and Triples were the games format for the day, and the winners were determined by six points for a win plus a point for each end won.

With each team comprising players from both clubs, it made for an interesting day!

The ultimate winners were Lou Saunders, John Lacey and Ray Maclaren on 21 points.

Results:

  • Henry Bliesner and Col Kratzmann def. Geoff Clutterbuck and Bruce Jonston 19-18
  • Felipe Munoz and Gladys Slatter def. Lyle Dascombe and Barry O’Brien 20-17
  • Darcy Munro, Brian Havell and Ross Olsson def. Evelyn Jensen, Bob Bougoure and Glen Yeates 23-21

Other scores:

  • Kev Profke, Ivy Wrembeck and Wayne Emms def. Brian Dugdell, Jenny Moore and Eunice Smith 20-11

Nanango News

Last Friday, in Scroungers, Ken Stieger topped the scoreboard with 40pts. Next best was Lew Saunders on 31pts.

In the weekly social on Tuesday. Bob Hammond, Lew Saunders, Cec Bracken and Jim Fowler defeated Bob Hall, Sue Tucker and Henry Bliesner 29-18.

The match of interest that day was the final of the Men’s B Grade Singles Championship.

Trying to win both the A Grade and B Grade Singles in the same year proved too difficult for Lew Saunders.

On the 17th end the score was 14-all, but Lew’s opponent Trevor George surged away after that to win 25-19.

On Wednesday, in the Ladies Social, a score of interest was Sue Tucker, Dot Hall and Sylvia Fanning’s defeat of Sue Tucker, Di McNeilage and Evelyn Jensen 24-7.
