Murgon State High School’s Open Rugby League team played against Bribie Island High in Gympie on Thursday for the Greg Smith Cup.

The Greg Smith Cup is part of the GIO Cup State Knockout and is played annually between the winners of the Sunshine Coast and Wide  Bay regions in honour of the former long-time principal of Murgon State High.

In an entertaining match, Murgon ran out winners 52-24, with both sides displaying flair and an attacking brand of footy.

Standouts for the Murgon team were five-eigth Barry Tapau, fullback Errol Simpson and halfback Elwin Fewquandie.

Mr Smith was on hand to present the trophy.

He said he was immensely proud of the Murgon boys and the spirit in which both teams played.
