We’ve done it! The South Burnett Eagles went through the 43kg carnival undefeated and hoisted the championship trophy

July 11, 2015

The South Burnett Eagles have broken a 50-year drought – and Murgon is celebrating a great week for the town – after the 50th Anniversary 43kg rugby league carnival drew to a close on Friday afternoon.

The young South Burnett players went through their games undefeated, although their second match-up on Day 1 ended in a hard-fought draw with the Balonne Barwon Bandits.

The Eagles’ results put them at the top of the ladder after all games were played, the first time they have achieved this in the 50 years the carnival has been running.

Eight teams took part: Balonne Barwon Bandits, Central Downs, Cunnamulla Rams, McIntyre, South Burnett Eagles, Warwick & Southern Downs, Western Downs Wild Dogs and the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls.

To top off the South Burnett success, four Eagles were then selected in the Country team which defeated City on Friday afternoon as a finale to the carnival: Bailey Alexander, Harry Perrett, Albert Dynevor and Glen Fisher.

The last time the 43kg Carnival was contested in Murgon was in 2007.

The 2015 event should have provided a mini-economic boost for the town, as each team was accompanied by a string of support staff.

Proud relatives and friends also filled the Murgon Showgrounds every day to watch the teams play.
