Sixteen old computers aren’t worth much to South Burnett CTC but to Brisbane man Graham Pampling, they will help to open up a world of possibilities for his students.
Using a computer can be tricky for anyone but for people with a visual impairment there is a steep learning curve before they can make practical use of what is basically a visual medium.
That’s why Graham – who is blind himself – is dedicated to teaching young blind students how to use computers.
He regularly visits Brisbane schools to help the students learn how to type and use standard Microsoft software. He then can introduce them to the world of the Internet.
The “Computer Club” is completely free for the students and the schools.
About two years ago, South Burnett CTC sent Graham 22 old computers for his students to use.
On Tuesday another load began its journey to Brisbane.
This time 12 computers, monitors and keyboards as well as four notebook computers were sent down.
South Burnett CTC’s IT Administrator Andrew Overton said the equipment was about seven years old but Graham would be able to put it to good use.
It was driven to Brisbane by CTC Board member John Box who volunteered for the task.
