Murgon artists Lee Porter and Sandy Hoffman and photographer Sherrianne Talon plan to hold an all-day street party in Murgon next month.
The focus of the party will be a pop-up gallery at 90 Lamb Street, next to the bakery in the heart of Murgon’s CBD, and the occasion will be the official unveiling of the group’s Dual Arts exhibition.
Dual Arts is an attempt to settle the 150-year-old debate about whether photography is really art.
Lee says there has never been a single study or exhibition that has seriously examined this question since photography was invented.
So she invited professional photographer Sherrianne Talon to join her in a joint effort to paint and photograph 20 iconic South Burnett scenes, events and activities nominated by the public to settle the debate once and for all.
South Burnett leather artist Sandy Hoffmann was also convinced to join the pair to manage the project and make sure it ran to schedule.
So far, neither Lee nor Sherrianne has seen each other’s work.
But on Saturday, July 4 – after more than six months work – the public will finally be able too see the pair’s paintings and photographs of the same things side-by-side and decide for themselves if photography is just digital reproduction, or if it can truly be considered an art form in its own right.
Dual Arts is being funded by an RADF grant through the South Burnett Regional Council which will be able to use the finished artworks to promote the region after the exhibition is over.
The exhibition will be open from 10:00am until 2:00pm on July 4, but after the official opening will remain on display from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily until the end of the month.
The trio promise the exhibition’s opening will put Murgon on the global art map.
There’ll be a street party outside complete with a sausage sizzle, amusement rides for children and lots of other things, while adults dip into champagne and nibbles inside the gallery.
All the images in the exhibition have been put into a glossy souvenir coffee table book which will also be unveiled at the opening.
The book will be a reminder of the exhibition as well as help to keep the pictures together long after Dual Arts has closed.
Only 2000 copies have been printed, and they’ll be available for purchase on the opening day for $24.98.
