A suggestion that businesses in Markwell Street, Kingaroy, be compensated for lost business due to road repairs would set a dangerous precedent if agreed upon, Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said on Tuesday.
He said Councillors had discussed the suggestion but had to rule the idea out.
“We are about to replace the footpaths in Proston, the businesses there could seek compensation, too,” the mayor said.
“And what about all the roadworks we have been doing in Nanango?
“And in Blackbutt, businesses there are going to have the same thing when Council starts repairs to stop the flooding.
“And in Murgon main street … and what about any future upgrade to the Kingaroy CBD?”
Mayor Kratzmann said Council had no choice but to do the road repairs in Markwell Street because underneath the bitumen it was “a swamp”.
However, he conceded that perhaps Council could more effective at communicating with affected shopkeepers.
