The South Burnett men’s soccer team has come home with the trophy after a nail-biting final of the South West Zone Championships played at Toowoomba at the weekend.
Football South Burnett senior chairman Mick North, obviously proud of the team’s performance, said it was a “remarkable achievement”.
Five teams entered the championships, which were played at at Middle Ridge Park: South Burnett, West Wanderers, South Toowoomba Hawks, Western Power and Stanthorpe
The competition was played as a round robin, with the teams finishing first and second playing for the trophy on Sunday afternoon.
West Wanderers and South Burnett finished well clear of the rest of the competition on 11 points each.
The championship final between the two sides – which had earlier played a nil-all draw – could not have been closer.
At the end of regulation time and extra time, South Burnett and Wanderers were locked at 1-all.
South Burnett won the ensuing penalty shoot out 4-3 and now have the opportunity to represent the South West Queensland zone at the Champions of Champions competition on the Sunshine Coast in September.
