Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss says the Federal Government has made a major commitment to rural areas by doubling Roads To Recovery funding for local councils.
Mr Truss made the statement this evening immediately following the release of the 2015-16 Federal Budget by Treasurer Joe Hockey.
“(This) provides a substantial increase in the amount of funding that councils can access to maintain and upgrade local roads,” Mr Truss said.
Under the funding, in 2015-16 local councils will receive:
- South Burnett Regional Council – $2,285,323
- Gympie Regional Council – $1,880,961
- Cherbourg Aboriginal Council – $55,510
- Toowoomba Regional Council – $6,500,000 (est)
In 2014-15, local councils received:
- South Burnett Regional Council – $1,142,662
- Gympie Regional Council – $940,481
- Cherbourg Aboriginal Council – $27,755
- Toowoomba Regional Council – $3,257,744
Money provided under the Roads to Recovery Program is not intended to replace normal council spending on road maintenance.
Instead, local councils nominate specific projects to be funded.
In the South Burnett, an average of three Roads To Recovery projects are undertaken each year.
