Ipswich Jets are taking on the Souths Logan Magpies in the Rivalry Round of the Intrust Super Cup at Jack O’Chin Oval in Cherbourg this Saturday

May 27, 2015

Some of the best rugby league players in Queensland will be on show on Saturday when a competition match from the statewide Intrust Super Cup comes back to the South Burnett.

Saturday’s game – between the top-of-the-table Ipswich Jets and the in-form Souths Logan Magpies is guaranteed to be an exciting game of rugby league.

The match, which will kick off at 3:00am, is the highlight of a big day of football planned at Jack O’Chin Oval at Cherbourg, which also includes two A Grade matches between South Burnett and Central Burnett teams.

This is the second year in a row that the South Burnett region has had the privilege of staging a game from the Intrust Super Cup competition (the Queensland Cup).

Last year, Kingaroy hosted a game as part of the Queensland Rugby League’s “Country Week” promotion.

This year, Cherbourg is hosting a game from the “Rivalry Round”, and there’s no doubt that Souths and the Jets are old rivals.

Ipswich fans would still remember the Magpies downing the Jets 24-18 in the 2008 Grand Final played before an Ipswich home crowd.

But this time around, the Jets – coached by former Broncos Ben and Shane Walker (and with brother and former Origin star Chris in the line-up) look to be in the stronger position.

They defeated last year’s premiers Northern Pride 26-22 in Round 5 of this year’s competition, and last week’s 32-16 win against the Tweed Head Seagulls has slotted them into equal first place on the competition ladder with the Townsville Blackhawks.

In comparison, the Magpies – coached by former State of Origin player Josh Hannay – have had a quieter start to the year but are coming into this game after back-to-back wins, including a 42-4 drubbing of Norths Devils last weekend.

Their PNG internationals, Matt Trnka and Josh Damon, have been listed in the team sheet for this round.

The two sides met twice last year, in Round 10 and Round 19. In the first match, the Jets were triumphant 18-10, but in the second, the Magpies won 42-40.

The big day at Cherbourg will be complemented by Round 1 of the Burnett Championship, the five-week integration of North Burnett teams into the South Burnett competition.

The Kingaroy Red Ants will take on Monto before the Cup game, while the Cherbourg Hornets will play Mundubbera afterwards to top off a huge day of rugby league.

Other highlights on the day will include relay races for 12s & Under and 13s & Over at half-time in the Intrust game (with QRL prizes) and there will also be an auction of the players’ jerseys worn during the Intrust Cup game after the match.

Admission is $5 (the usual admission cost to an Intrust Super Cup game is $10).

This is a fundraiser for South Burnett Rugby League.

NB. There are alcohol restrictions at Cherbourg and the match is an alcohol-free event. Police are expected to be randomly checking cars for alcohol as they did before last year’s South Burnett Grand Final, so officials have suggested that spectators allow an extra 15 minutes for any delays.

A large crowd was at Jack O’Chin Oval for last year’s Grand Final … organisers hope for an equally strong turnout – or more – for the Intrust Super Cup game on Saturday
