Despite fears Nanango’s popular “Big Screen Festival” might be scrapped due to Budget cuts at the National Film and Sound Archives, movie fans can breathe easy – the festival is going ahead as planned in June.
Ryan Corr, star of “The Water Diviner” and “Packed to the Rafters” will be the special guest star for the red carpet opening night on Friday, June 12.
This year’s festival will also include a fundraiser on Saturday, June 13, the “Heritage Bank Nanango Paper Plane Championships” – a tie-in with one of the other films being shown during the festival, “Paper Planes”.
The Festival will be held at the Nanango Cultural Centre from June 12-14.
“We hope that audiences will enjoy the selection we’re bringing this year. From children’s films to psychological thrillers, there’s something for everyone!” NFSA National Programs Co-ordinator Cassandra Chester said.
There will also be a series of special compilations commemorating the Anzac Centenary

This is the fifth consecutive year that Heritage Nanango Community Branch has sponsored the Big Screen Film Festival.
“We’re proud that our continued support of this event means that the South Burnett has been able to retain our annual Big Screen Film Festival after government cut-backs. We understand that many other communities were not as lucky,” Heritage Nanango Community Funding Ltd chair Wendy Zerbst said.
“Since Heritage Nanango began sponsoring this event, we have been able to assist the organisers to bring Sigrid Thornton, Martin Sacks, Magda Szubanski, John Wood, and now Ryan Corr to Nanango to introduce us to a great variety of films.
“About $32,000 (has been provided by Heritage Nanango) since 2011 to assist the South Burnett Regional Council to stage this high quality event.”
